Panasonic Motors
About Panasonic
The electronics group Panasonic was founded in Japan in 1918. The company's extensive product range includes items from the entertainment and household electronics sectors - e.g. washing machines, kitchen appliances, flat screen TVs, cameras, hi-fi and audio equipment, razors, etc. The product range also includes high-quality motors. Panasonic e-bike drives were among the best-selling in German-speaking countries for a long time. But even though Bosch drives are the most successful in this country today, Panasonic drives have continued to assert themselves in the e-bike market thanks to innovative new developments and good quality. Today, Panasonic e-bike motors are installed in models from KTM, FLYER (e.g. T-series), Kreidler and KETTLER, among others.
Panasonic e-bike motors
Panasonic produced and produces rear, front and mid-mounted motors for e-bikes.
The Panasonic rear-wheel drive has the advantage of being lightweight and, with a diameter of just 140 mm, extremely small. The motor features an integrated gearbox, which ensures particularly good power delivery.
The Panasonic front-wheel drive is technically quite simple and therefore extremely affordable. It is primarily designed for comfort and is ideal for short trips in the city or countryside. One advantage is that the motor can be easily combined with a coaster brake and hub or derailleur gears.
The Panasonic 36V mid-engine 2014, with which the company countered the powerful competition from Bosch. Compared to the previous Panasonic mid-motor systems, this new drive was optimized in many ways: The design was more compact and lighter, the propulsion was more powerful (60 Nm for KTM), there was an optimized display, etc. In addition, the previously used chain deflection was eliminated and instead a direct drive was used. This means that the chainring is now driven by the motor itself - and not, as before, via an additional pinion. It is also worth mentioning that the Panasonic mid-motor system was also optionally available with a backpedal function - in general, it is noticeable that Panasonic placed great emphasis on comfort with this drive.
There are now a whole range of Panasonic mid-engine systems that differ, for example, in the position of the battery: "Rear Mount" with battery at the rear, and "Front Mount" with battery integrated on the down tube.
Panasonic X0 and GX0 motors
In 2018, Panasonic introduced the X0 motor. This drive system increased torque by 5 Nm to a full 80 Nm. Because the motor eliminates the internal gearing, it is even lighter than its predecessors. Furthermore, the assisted cadence range was increased to 110 revolutions per minute, so that the rider still receives motor assistance even when pedaling quickly. The Panasonic X0 motor is now available in various versions with slightly different technical specifications.
The next generation of Panasonic mid-drive motors, the GX2019, followed in 0 – a completely new development designed primarily for use in e-mountain bikes. The maximum torque was increased again to 90 Nm, and the motor even provides assistance up to a maximum cadence of 130 revolutions per minute. Despite these impressive figures, the Panasonic GX0 is quite lightweight, weighing just 2,95 kg. This motor is used, for example, in FLYER Uproc e-bikes.
Can Panasonic mid-engines be optimized?
Yes! There are also effective, easy-to-use tools for Panasonic e-bike systems that can easily make the bikes faster. However, tuning solutions currently only exist for Panasonic mid-drive motors.
