Yamaha Powerdrive E-bike tuning

The E-Bike Tuning Yamaha Overview. The popular Yamaha PW (Powerdrive) drive system was launched in 2014 and was used in many e-bikes. No wonder, because it was small and light, yet powerful (70 Nm), and featured a particularly fine response. In 2017, the even more powerful, yet lighter Yamaha PW-X Motor specifically designed for use in E-MTBs (80 Nm). The drive was equipped with an additional support level for particularly steep climbs. Starting with the 2018 model year, the next variant of the PW motor followed, namely the Yamaha PW-SE Mid-engine ("SE"="Sport Edition") - a real all-rounder that lies between the classic Yamaha PW and the PW-X could be positioned. The PW series has been continuously optimized and adapted to the requirements of specific e-bike types, so that various other variants have now been added, e.g.Yamaha PW-ST, PW-X2, PW-TE, PW-CE. In 2022, the completely newly developed Yamaha PW-X3 Motor, which was again specifically designed for use in e-mountain bikes. In 2024, the Yamaha PW XM Drive presented, the new premium drive among the Yamaha eMTB drives (85 Nm).
For all of the Yamaha e-bike drives mentioned above, there are a number of attractive tuning solutions available - however, it is always important to ensure that the tuning is compatible with the respective Yamaha display (there are various versions such as Display A, Display B, Display C, Display X, etc.). One example to highlight is the RedPed module, which is even available in a version specifically for the popular Yamaha PW-X3 and PW-S2 engines. Even for the PW-XM engine, compatible tuning solutions exist, with the PearTune 3.0 module should be mentioned (PearTune Modules have already proven themselves in many e-bike drives and are considered to be very reliable). Particularly interesting are the Yamaha Tuning Tools from SpeedBox, as these modules are available in a "normal" and an app-enabled "B.Tuning" version with additional features. The popular Badass Box 4 is available for various Yamaha engines. The VOLspeed Modules allow for a wide range of settings directly via the e-bike display. Tuning solutions from other providers are also available, such as SpeedChip, MBIQ or sIMPLEk.
Worth mentioning is the removable Splug Tuning dongle for Yamaha PW-X3, PW-S2 and SyncDrive Pro2 - a particularly original tuning solution in which all tuning-relevant hardware and software is contained in the dongle itself. Once the dongle is removed, no tuning components remain on the bike.
Even for various e-bikes of the own brand "Yamaha", such as the "Yamaha Moro 07", there are now first tuning solutions, e.g. from VOLspeed or SpeedBox ("SpeedBox 3.3").
