6) Legend
Features
How comprehensive is the tuning product? Does it only divide the frequency and increase the maximum motor support, or can other settings be made? What features does it offer?
Note: Of course, every tuning can manipulate the maximum motor support, i.e., shift or remove the upper speed limit. This is the minimum requirement and the norm for e-bike tuning. While the Sx2 dongle allows tuning to be activated via the display, tuning modules (such as the RedPed, VOLspeed, SpeedBox,...) In some cases, even individual support modes can be assigned a speed limit, or the limit can be set or removed entirely. The MTT display or the JUM-Ped function quite differently, allowing for many additional adjustment options via a conventional tuning chip, such as modifying the peak wattage.
Easy installation of the tuning
How easy is it to install the tuning? Do I need any tools? Do I need special tools? How long does the installation take?
Note: While with the JUM-Ped, where you only have to plug the cables on the console into the JUM-Ped, or with the Badassebikes Chiptuning Box, where you have to plug the tuning onto the sensor on the rear wheel, with the Sx2 Dongle, RedPed, VOLspeed, PearTune, SpeedBox or MTT SmartChip A completely different matter: Here the engine compartment is unscrewed and the tuning is installed.
Note: While installation in a Yamaha engine is comparatively easy and can be accomplished without special tools, installation in a Bosch Classic engine (Gen1) requires only two special tools (Bosch Spider and ISIS crank puller). For the newer Bosch Active, Performance Motors (Bosch Gen2 and Gen3) can usually be removed with a special tool (ISIS crank puller). The latest Bosch motors (Bosch Gen4 and Bosch Smart System) now largely no longer require any special tools; ordinary Torx and Allen keys are completely sufficient.
Invisible after installation
Is the tuning visible after installation?
Note: For some, it is important that the tuning cannot be seen from the outside. Only the Badass Box cannot be hidden at all. Splug With the Sx2 dongle or the Sx2 dongle, it depends on how the cable set is installed. However, there are exceptions here too: With the SxXNUMX dongle version with an activation switch, you can install everything completely in the engine compartment and use the light switch to activate it, but this allows for quick and easy removal of the tuning. The e-bike tuning modules (tuning chips) are usually not visible from the outside.
Switch on / off while driving
Can the tuning be turned on and off while driving or touring? Do I have to stop briefly to do this, or do I have to completely disassemble the engine at home?
Note: With the JUM-Ped it is necessary to stop while driving and connect the JUM-Ped to switch off the tuning. Badass Box Removing the box and moving the magnet, with a brief pause in the ride, is also sufficient. This is where e-bike tuning dongles come in handy, as they can be deactivated by simply unplugging the dongle. With the Sx2 dongle without an activation switch, simply unplugging the dongle is sufficient. If it's installed properly, this should be quite easy.
No more tuning module on the bike
Can the e-bike be brought back into compliance with road traffic regulations while driving or touring?
Note: A difficult question that we cannot definitively answer. Most tuning chips can only be completely removed by opening the engine. Badass Box and with the JUM-Ped you definitely need some time to remove it - so you get off again and take a short break during the ride, but in this case the disassembly is then completely complete. This seems to be one of the unbeatable strengths of the dongle: the dongle can be removed in seconds and almost imperceptibly without much effort. This means that the tuning product itself is no longer on the e-bike. Whether this means that you are not violating the German Road Traffic Act if the rest of the wiring harness remains on the e-bike is a question we cannot answer. In any case, the active components, both hardware and software, are no longer on the e-bike once it has been removed. We therefore recommend that you do not take the e-bike out on the road at all. This is ultimately the best choice.
Invisible dismantling
If you remove the tuning, does it leave any noticeable marks on the e-bike or the e-bike motor?
Note: For some users, it is important whether the tuning leaves external traces on the e-bike after removal or not. While the Badass Box While the Jum-Ped and the Jump-Ped leave no trace, the other tunings aren't entirely without trace. Most e-bike tuning chips at least have plug-in connections, but the Sx2 dongle still uses insulation displacement terminals to connect the cable harness to the motor (exceptions: the Sx2 dongle with the active switch and the Sx2 dongle with the Yamaha cable harness). Both require unscrewing the motor compartment, and if you don't proceed carefully, visible traces will remain. That's certainly not a good look.
Easy dismantling
How easy is the complete disassembly? Do I need any tools?
Note: If you want to permanently remove all tuning, there are some differences in the effort involved. The big difference from the previous point is tuning modules, which could previously be removed relatively invisibly, but as we can see now, require considerably more effort.
Note: With the Sx2 dongle, disassembly also depends on accessibility to the motor. While disassembly from a Yamaha motor is comparatively easy and can be accomplished without special tools, disassembly from a Bosch Classic motor (Gen1) requires two special tools (the Bosch Spider and the ISIS crank puller). Therefore, it's best not to resell the tool.
Correct display km and km/h
Does the tuning display correct values such as kilometers traveled or speed on the display while driving?
Note: From the customer's perspective, a very important factor in the purchase decision for tuning is whether the displayed values, such as kilometers traveled and speed, are correctly represented on the display. Badass Box and the Sx2 dongle do this entirely. E-bike tuning chips, with their microprocessor-controlled electronics, make some effort to display these values correctly. The JUM-Ped or the MTT display don't have these problems at all, as they don't use frequency division. The new Bosch Smart System motors, for example, are completely unable to display accurate values on the display. Whether and to what extent accurate data can be displayed therefore always depends on the motor.
