Important information on tuning measures for e-bikes and e-scooters
We expressly point out that any modification to e-bikes and e-scooters – whether through hardware tuning (e.g. tuning chips, dongles, sensor adapters) or software tuning (e.g. apps, programs or USB tools) – can have significant consequences.
⸻
Legal information
• If the speed limit of an e-bike is lifted, the vehicle loses its classification as a pedelec according to the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO).
• Participation in public road traffic with a tuned vehicle is only permitted if it is:
• is approved,
• is insured (with insurance number),
• a valid driving license is available and
• the helmet requirement is observed.
• The illegal operation of a tuned e-bike in public spaces can result in criminal and administrative penalties, including:
• Driving without a license (§ 21 StVG)
• Violation of the Compulsory Insurance Act (§ 6 PflVG)
• Manufacturers view any form of tuning – whether via chip or software – as an unauthorized modification of the vehicle's control system. This can lead to immediate loss of warranty, exclusion from the warranty, and blocking in diagnostic systems.
⸻
security risks
An e-bike modified through tuning is operated beyond its performance limits. This can lead to the following risks, among others:
• Overloading of components such as brakes, tires, frame or engine
• Increased wear on drive components
• Unforeseeable system errors or malfunctions
⸻
