This is an ingenious tuning solution to remove the 25 km/h speed limit, so you can drive open and without restrictions. This is a Badass Box specially for Bosch Smart System E-Bikes with Performance CX Line Engines of the years 2022 - 2024These models are often referred to as “Bosch Gen4“ – you can recognize them by the internal technical designation “BDU37“ (=“Bosch Drive Unit with serial number 37”). This version of the box is intended exclusively for models with rim magnet.
Note: From the beginning of 2025, the "Bosch Gen4 / BDU37" was gradually replaced by the "Bosch CX Gen5" with the technical designation "BDU38". If you have a "Bosch CX Gen5" e-bike with a rim magnet, please select the "Badass Box 5 for Bosch rim magnet BDU38".
The Badass Box 5 comes with a completely redesigned housing, which, by popular request, features a special seal. Furthermore, the electronics are glued into the housing and completely sealed to protect it from moisture and mechanical stress.
In contrast to the previous models, the new Badass Box 5 is no longer restricted to a specific sensor type, but is adapted to the various drive systems using an adapter. This allows the Badass Box 5 can continue to be used with a new adapter if the e-bike is changed.
Tuning can be easily done using the optional Boost Buddy App
Configure. This also gives you the option to update the box's firmware using your mobile phone if needed. It's easy and free.
Please note: When tuning is active, the e-bike display no correct speed values. However, you can easily see the correct speed using the Boost Buddy App
(iOS & Android). We recommend special Smartphone holders for the handlebars so that you always have a good view of the display.

Badass Box 5 Installation & Functionality
Below, we explain how to install the tuning and how to unlock the drive. Installation has been kept as simple as possible.
First of all: Bosch Smart System E-bikes with rim magnet there is a magnet on the valve of the rear wheel, which Impulse or the vehicle speed is transmitted to the sensor of the drive system, which is integrated in the engine. This is exactly where the Badass Box 5 an.
Installation of the tuning
-First the original magnet must be removed from the rear wheel.
-Instead of the original magnet, a small magnet with a screw cap is mounted in the spokes. This new magnet sends its Impulse no longer to the sensor in the engine, but directly to the Badass Box 5, which is attached anywhere on the chainstay (with cable ties).
-The Badass Box is connected via a plug to a pulse generator, which in turn sends signals to the original sensor in the engine (the pulse generator coil finds the correct location for mounting on the engine almost automatically, and only needs to click firmly into the correct position). These signals are similar in form and duration to the original rear wheel signals, but depending on the type of Badass Box The number of signals is reduced, or the signal is frozen at a certain speed. This constantly tricks the drive into thinking the speed is lower than the actual speed. As a result, the motor provides assistance even at speeds above 25 km/h, and there is essentially no speed limit.
-This means that the new Badass Box 5, just like the previous models, does not interfere directly with the electronic drive system during tuning.
-Please note: Since there is no direct cable connection between the tuning box and the drive with this operating principle, all speed-relevant data on the display will be distorted - this applies to the current speed, average and maximum speed, as well as the distance traveled, etc. However, you can easily get the correct data via the Boost Buddy App display.
Compatibility
The adapter of this Badass Box 5 only fits:
Bosch Smart System Performance 2022-2024 CX motors with the technical designation "BDU37" (Bosch Gen4) with rim magnet. Compatible with the latest software and firmware versions.
Compatible with Bosch Smart System upgrade from July 2025 (version 16.19.0, the so-called "100Nm Upgrade"). Also compatible with all older software versions.
In models with a rim magnet, the sensor is integrated into the motor, so it's not visible from the outside. You can recognize a rim magnet by the rather large magnet on the rear wheel valve:

If you perform firmware updates or upgrades on your e-bike, there is no guarantee that the tuning will still work afterwards!
To install an E-Bike tuning chip in your E-Bike it is sometimes special tools necessary. Please check previously whether you have to open the engine compartment to access the motor connectors. This is especially true for products from the Modules, Kit, Dongle and Sensor.
Normally (but not always) opening the engine compartment requires loosening the crank. To do this, you will need a Crank puller. Some engines also have a Spider Tool This is important for opening the lock ring on the chainring - because the chainring must be loosened here so that the motor cover can be removed to access the inside of the motor. If you want to replace the chainring (wear, change the gear ratio), you often need a Spider Tool. The necessary special tools can also be found in our shop. To remove the engine cover, you usually need a Torx or Allen key. For installing the modules, appropriate Pliers from the electronics sector.
Do you decide not for a tuning solution that you have to install in the engine compartment (Box, Software), there is no need for any tools. In our Guide you will find further tips.

Important information on tuning measures for e-bikes and e-scooters
We expressly point out that any modification to e-bikes and e-scooters – whether through hardware tuning (e.g. tuning chips, dongles, sensor adapters) or software tuning (e.g. apps, programs or USB tools) – can have consequences.
Tuning measures on e-bikes and e-scooters mean that they are no longer permitted for use on public roads as defined by the StVZO (Road Traffic Licensing Regulations). Legal use is therefore only possible on private property or - if permitted - in competitions. Riding an e-bike or e-scooter modified by tuning measures on public roads can lead to criminal liability for driving without a license (Section 21 of the Road Traffic Act) and driving without insurance (Section 6 of the PflVG). Tuning measures on e-bikes can lead to the loss of warranty rights and manufacturer guarantees. Furthermore, tuning measures can lead to the loss of insurance coverage and benefits from accident victim assistance in the event of an accident. The e-bike (or e-scooter) modified by tuning measures is subject to additional stress due to the higher speed, which can lead to safety risks.
