This is a practical tuning solution especially for Bosch Smart System drives with Performance CX engines and the technical identification “BDU38” (“Bosch Drive Unit with serial number 38”). These models, introduced successively from the beginning of 2025, are sometimes referred to as "Bosch CX Gen5" or simply "Bosch Gen5." This tuning is aimed exclusively at models with a rim magnet.
Tip: If you have a Bosch Smart System E-Bike have with Performance CX engine of the years 2022-2024 (often referred to as “Bosch Gen4”) and the technical marking “BDU37” (and with rim magnet), please select the "Badass Box 5 for Bosch rim magnet BDU37".
For the Badass Box 5 the housing of the box was completely redesigned and optimized, for example an extra seal was added.
In contrast to its predecessors, the Badass Box 5 no longer needs to be pushed onto a specific sensor type, but is adapted to the respective drives with an adapter. As a result, the Badass Box 5 continue to use with a new adapter when changing e-bikes.
It is also practical that the Badass Box 5 with the Boost Buddy App compatible (iOS & Android). The app allows for easy tuning configuration; new firmware can also be installed on the box if required. Furthermore, the Boost Buddy App also as a speedometer to show the correct speed on the smartphone display (when tuning is active, the original e-bike display shows no correct values no longer appear).
The Badass Box Tuning tools are developed and manufactured in Germany.

Badass Box 5 – Features at a glance

Tip: You can get the correct speed via the Boost Buddy App on your smartphone. It is best to use special brackets to attach your phone directly to the handlebars. So you always have it in view.
-The energy supply of the Badass Box Power is still provided by the proven AAA battery. This has a long range of 7.000 km or 1 year (due to battery discharge). Suitable replacement batteries are available everywhere.
-Optimized housing: The housing of the Badass Box is now even slimmer and has also been equipped with an extra seal.
-The box is robust and weatherproof: The tuning electronics have been glued into the housing and completely sealed so that they are optimally protected from mechanical stress on the bike and from moisture.

Badass Box 5 Installation & Functionality
Below, we explain how to install the tuning and how to unlock the drive. Installation has been kept as simple as possible.
First of all: Bosch Smart System E-bikes with rim magnet there is a magnet on the valve of the rear wheel, which Impulse or the vehicle speed is transmitted to the sensor of the drive system, which is integrated in the engine. This is exactly where the Badass Box 5 an.
Installation of the tuning
-First the original magnet must be removed from the rear wheel.
-Instead of the original magnet, a small magnet with a screw cap is mounted in the spokes. This new magnet sends its Impulse no longer to the sensor in the engine, but directly to the Badass Box 5, which is attached anywhere on the chainstay (with cable ties).
-The Badass Box is connected via a plug to a pulse generator, which in turn sends signals to the original sensor in the engine (the pulse generator coil finds the correct location for mounting on the engine almost automatically, and only needs to click firmly into the correct position). These signals are similar in form and duration to the original rear wheel signals, but depending on the type of Badass Box The number of signals is reduced, or the signal is frozen at a certain speed. This constantly tricks the drive into thinking the speed is lower than the actual speed. As a result, the motor provides assistance even at speeds above 25 km/h, and there is essentially no speed limit.
-This means that the new Badass Box 5, just like the previous models, does not interfere directly with the electronic drive system during tuning.
-Please note: Since there is no direct cable connection between the tuning box and the drive with this operating principle, all speed-relevant data on the display will be distorted - this applies to the current speed, average and maximum speed, as well as the distance traveled, etc. However, you can easily get the correct data via the Boost Buddy App display.

The adapter of this Badass Box 5 only fits:
Bosch Smart System Performance CX motors from 2025 with the technical designation “BDU38” (Bosch Gen5) with rim magnet. Compatible with the latest software and firmware versions.
Note: On e-bikes with a rim magnet, the sensor is integrated into the motor, making it invisible from the outside. You can identify models with a rim magnet by the relatively large magnet on the rear wheel valve – here's a photo:

IMPORTANT: Do not perform e-bike updates
The manufacturer of this product ("Badass eBikes GmbH") strongly advises against performing firmware updates or upgrades on your e-bike. It's entirely possible that the tuning may no longer work after an update!

Tools
To install an E-Bike tuning chip in your E-Bike it is sometimes special tools necessary. Please check previously whether you have to open the engine compartment to access the motor connectors. This is especially true for products from the Modules, Kit, Dongle and Sensor.
Normally (but not always) opening the engine compartment requires loosening the crank. To do this, you will need a Crank puller. Some engines also have a Spider Tool This is important for opening the lock ring on the chainring - because the chainring must be loosened here so that the motor cover can be removed to access the inside of the motor. If you want to replace the chainring (wear, change the gear ratio), you often need a Spider Tool. The necessary special tools can also be found in our shop. To remove the engine cover, you usually need a Torx or Allen key. For installing the modules, appropriate Pliers from the electronics sector.
Do you decide not for a tuning solution that you have to install in the engine compartment (Box, Software), there is no need for any tools. In our Guide you will find further tips.

Important information on tuning measures for e-bikes and e-scooters
We expressly point out that any modification to e-bikes and e-scooters – whether through hardware tuning (e.g. tuning chips, dongles, sensor adapters) or software tuning (e.g. apps, programs or USB tools) – can have consequences.
Tuning measures on e-bikes and e-scooters mean that they are no longer permitted for use on public roads as defined by the StVZO (Road Traffic Licensing Regulations). Legal use is therefore only possible on private property or - if permitted - in competitions. Riding an e-bike or e-scooter modified by tuning measures on public roads can lead to criminal liability for driving without a license (Section 21 of the Road Traffic Act) and driving without insurance (Section 6 of the PflVG). Tuning measures on e-bikes can lead to the loss of warranty rights and manufacturer guarantees. Furthermore, tuning measures can lead to the loss of insurance coverage and benefits from accident victim assistance in the event of an accident. The e-bike (or e-scooter) modified by tuning measures is subject to additional stress due to the higher speed, which can lead to safety risks.

Shipping costs for Germany are €4,90; shipping is waived for orders over €180. For countries within the EU, shipping costs are €12,90; shipping is waived for orders over €2.000. We currently do not ship to countries outside the EU. We also do not ship to the USA, France, or Canada (including any overseas territories). We ask that you bear the costs of any return shipments yourself. Please note that customs duties may apply in countries outside the European Union.
