MBIQ-P for Shimano EP801 / EP6 / EP600

The MBIQ-P for Shimano EP801/EP6/EP600 mid-drive motors is a "hybrid" tuning module with two different manipulation modes. It was specifically developed for the latest generation of motors. In addition to the classic "Freeze" mode, there is also the innovative "Damp" mode.

The MBIQ-P module overrides the preset 25 km/h speed limit, allowing the maximum speed to be individually adjusted as needed. No additional devices (e.g., a PC or smartphone) are required. The default setting allows a maximum speed of up to 34 km/h.

Easy installation: The existing speed sensor can be plugged in directly. The tuning features the same connectors as the existing sensor cable, allowing for easy integration between the speed sensor and the engine control unit.

Please note: To gain access to the corresponding connectors, the engine cover must be removed briefly.  Important: In some e-bike models the motor is integrated into the frame - in this case it must be completely removed to access the connections (e.g. ORBEA, ....).

The MBIQ-P is compatible with most common motor firmwares from various manufacturers and operates using a microcontroller. This includes compatibility with Shimano firmware 4.4.2, etc.

“Hybrid Tamper”

Instead of the familiar FREEZE manipulation (freezing the speedometer at 25 km/h), the MBIQ-P module uses a new, additional manipulation method, the DAMP mode. This "damps" the output manipulated speed according to an algorithm, reaching a final speed by a factor of X.

Note: According to the manufacturer, the "Freeze" mode is disabled for the specified Shimano motors due to the manipulation detection of the motor software not recommended. However, the module is already set to DAMP mode (factory setting 1,35 = approximately 34 km/h top speed).

Functionality

The current speed profile is analyzed, processed and - if tuning is activated - manipulated values are output.

Display in the e-bike display

Steam mode: The output speed corresponds approximately to the actual speed, but damped by a preset, configurable factor. The factory setting is 1,35.

Here's an example: Output value = 25 km/h, actual top speed 33,75 km/h. (25 * 1,35 = 33,75)

Freeze mode: Up to a value of approximately 22 to 25 km/h, the displayed speed roughly corresponds to the actual speed (varies depending on the system). At higher (real) speeds, the displayed value always remains around this range, but never higher than 25 km/h.

Here is an example: The displayed speed is 22 km/h, but in reality the speed is around 40 km/h, etc.

The total kilometers displayed are also lower for journeys with active tuning for the corresponding range.

Motion Programming

Customer-programmable: The functionality of the tuning module can be programmed after installation without the need for additional equipment. For example, you can specify whether the tuning should be active permanently or only for the current ride ("tuning based on power-on condition"). The maximum speed can also be set. Programming is performed when the e-bike is started up using specific wheel movements. The sensor must be guided along the spoke magnet, which causes specific values to appear on the display (see illustration below). Detailed operating instructions are included.

Important: In the delivery state, the MBIQ-P module is in DAMP mode with a set factor of 1,35This allows top speeds of up to approximately 34 km/h. Adjusting the value/mode is the owner's responsibility and may (but does not necessarily) lead to tamper detection. This is signaled by the error code: E295. If this code appears, the value/mode must be adjusted back immediately.

Attention! If error E295 is ignored multiple times, the entire drive unit will be locked and error E299 will be displayed. This can only be reversed by the dealer!

    MBIQ-P for Shimano EP801 / EP6 / EP600 – Compatibility

This tuning module is only compatible with the following Shimano e-bike drives:

    • EP801 / RS (DU-EP801) / also compatible with software version 4.3.0 / 4.4.2 etc...
    • EP6 / EP600 (DU-EP600) / RS

Also compatible with Di2, although the automatic mode may react slightly differently due to the damping.

    Important instructions:

-Due to the possible tuning detection, the operating mode Freeze is not recommended. Adjusting the multiplier in DAMP mode is also done at your own risk, as excessively high values can lead to malfunctions (the default setting is 1,35, which corresponds to a maximum speed of approximately 34 km/h).

-For the tuning to work properly with EP801 and EP6 drives, the ACC connection must be activated! Unfortunately, this is not the case for all models. If the ACC connection cannot be activated, the module can also be connected to the lights. The disadvantage of this solution is that activation via the lights is not possible, and the lights must always be on.

-Speed-based assistance systems such as electronic Di2 shifting also receive the manipulated signals for processing and must be adjusted accordingly. Proper functioning cannot be guaranteed in general!

    “Anti-tuning” ready

The MBIQ-P is compatible with common engine firmwares from manufacturers. The manipulated values do not affect the engine software's evaluation.

    • Easy installation - The tuning is simply plugged between the existing sensor cable and the motor. If necessary, it can be removed again to restore the e-bike to its original condition.
    • Compatible connectors - The tuning module has the same connectors for an optimal connection.

By default, the module is set to DAMP mode with a factor of 1,35. This allows a top speed of up to approximately 34 km/h.

Adjusting the value/mode is the responsibility of the owner and may (but does not necessarily) lead to tamper detections.

This is indicated by the error code E295. If this appears, the value/mode must be reset immediately.

Caution: The preset value has proven to be error-free in our testing, but is not a guarantee. If you receive errors regardless of the operating mode, remove the module immediately and contact the manufacturer. If error E295 is ignored repeatedly, the entire drive unit will be locked and error E299 will be displayed. This can only be reversed by your dealer!

To install an E-Bike tuning chip in your E-Bike it is sometimes special tools necessary. Please check previously whether you have to open the engine compartment to access the motor connectors. This is especially true for products from the Modules, Kit, Dongle and Sensor

Normally (but not always) opening the engine compartment requires loosening the crank. To do this, you will need a Crank pullerSome engines also have a Spider Tool This is important for opening the lock ring on the chainring - because the chainring must be loosened here so that the motor cover can be removed to access the inside of the motor. If you want to replace the chainring (wear, change the gear ratio), you often need a Spider Tool. The necessary special tools can also be found in our shop. To remove the engine cover, you usually need a Torx or Allen key. For installing the modules, appropriate Pliers from the electronics sector.

Do you decide not for a tuning solution that you have to install in the engine compartment (Box, Software), there is no need for any tools. In our Guide you will find further tips.

Important information on tuning measures for e-bikes and e-scooters

We expressly point out that any modification to e-bikes and e-scooters – whether through hardware tuning (e.g. tuning chips, dongles, sensor adapters) or software tuning (e.g. apps, programs or USB tools) – can have consequences.

Tuning measures on e-bikes and e-scooters mean that they are no longer permitted for use on public roads as defined by the StVZO (Road Traffic Licensing Regulations). Legal use is therefore only possible on private property or - if permitted - in competitions. Riding an e-bike or e-scooter modified by tuning measures on public roads can lead to criminal liability for driving without a license (Section 21 of the Road Traffic Act) and driving without insurance (Section 6 of the PflVG). Tuning measures on e-bikes can lead to the loss of warranty rights and manufacturer guarantees. Furthermore, tuning measures can lead to the loss of insurance coverage and benefits from accident victim assistance in the event of an accident. The e-bike (or e-scooter) modified by tuning measures is subject to additional stress due to the higher speed, which can lead to safety risks.
