MTT SmartSensor: The sensor for Bosch Smart System
The MTT SmartSensor is a highly effective tuning sensor that allows you to exceed the 25 km/h speed limit of E-MTBs with Bosch Smart System drive. This allows for much faster riding with full motor support.
The MTT SmartSensor doesn't require its own battery. When tuning is active, your display will no longer show accurate readings at speeds above approximately 22 km/h (depending on wheel size and bike).
The MTT solutions for Bosch Smart System motors are currently the best products for this engine. They generate by far the fewest error messages among the new Bosch motors.
Tip: Simply use GPS-enabled devices like your smartphone if you want to see your real speed while on the go. brackets can be found directly in our shop.
Three different operating modes
With the MTT SmartSensor, you have the option to turn the tuning on and off as needed. Three different operating modes are available. The operating modes are selected when starting up the e-bike by making specific wheel movements, which move the spoke magnet along the sensor.
- Tuning permanently activated (Factory setting): Speed limit is lifted, correct speed display only up to approx. 22 km/h (depending on wheel circumference and e-bike model).
- Tuning permanently deactivated: Motor support up to 25 km/h, correct speed display.
- Tuning according to switch-on condition: Here you can spontaneously decide whether tuning should be activated or not when turning on the bike. To activate tuning, the magnet must be in front of the sensor for at least 4 seconds when turning on the e-bike (sensor active); otherwise, tuning remains deactivated.
You can even individually adjust the maximum assisted speed using specific wheel movements. You can find out more in the manual.
Note: When delivered, the MTT is always in “Tuning permanently activated” mode (with maximum speed support).
Functionality
Once installed, the MTT SmartSensor will analyze and process the current speed profile, and—if tuning is enabled—output manipulated values. This circumvents the preset 25 km/h speed limit, allowing you to drive much faster with motor assistance.
Please note:
Because the MTT SmartSensor blocks speeds above 25 km/h for the motor firmware when tuning is active, the displayed speed always remains ≤ 25 km/h. Typically, the correct speed is no longer displayed at speeds above approximately 22 km/h (depending on the wheel circumference and e-bike model).
Therefore, the system's total mileage display will no longer correspond to the actual distance traveled.
Installation
For installation, the e-bike's original speed sensor must be replaced with the MTT tuning sensor (we recommend keeping the original sensor so that you can restore the e-bike to its original condition if necessary).
The original sensor is located on the rear frame of your e-bike, possibly next to the thru axle. There, the sensor works in conjunction with the magnet attached to the rear wheel/disc brake. Note that the sensor cable is often routed through the frame. The connector end is plugged into the motor compartment, which is usually protected by a plastic cover.
To access the connectors, the motor's plastic cover (and sometimes a crank) must be temporarily removed.
MTT for Bosch Smart System Compatibility
This tuning tool is compatible with E-MTBs with the “Bosch Smart System" drive, sometimes referred to as "Bosch Gen4 2022" or "BES3" ("Bosch Development Stage 3"). The system uses mid-engines.
Also compatible with Bosch Smart System Gen5 (from 2024), sometimes referred to as “Bosch CX Gen5” (assuming the e-bike does not have a rim magnet or ABS Pro).
Compatible up to Bosch Smart System Software 12.13.0.
Addendum: Compatible with Bosch Smart System Upgrade April 2025
This tuning tool is most likely also compatible with the Bosch Smart System upgrade from April 2025 (sometimes referred to as version "15.10.1" or "15.13.1"). You can identify the upgrade by the following software versions: Drive Unit Performance Line CX: 15.24.2 / LED Remote: 15.12.3 / Kiox 300: 15.10.0 / PowerTube 750: 15.10.1
Cable length: 1200 mm
Important: Not compatible with e-bikes that have a magnet on the valve (rim magnet). For this you need the RimBoost.
-Not compatible with Bosch e-bikes with ABS system.
Attention: Please do not perform any Bosch updates after installing and using an MTT tuning! Compatibility may no longer be guaranteed.
Tip: Bosch Smart System E-Bikes (BES3) can be easily identified by the plug on the charging cable.
SQUARE plug = Bosch Smart System BES3 (Gen4) + Bosch Gen5:

ROUND plug = Bosch Gen2, Gen3 & Gen4:

Does your Bosch E-Bike charging cable have a square plug (as shown above), you have the correct Tuning module selected (if the bike does not have ABS and a rim magnet). If your Bosch e-bike does not have either of these connectors, you either do NOT have a Bosch e-bike, or you have an e-bike with the old Gen1 drive (Classic Line).

Tools
To install an E-Bike tuning chip in your E-Bike it is sometimes special tools necessary. Please check previously whether you have to open the engine compartment to access the motor connectors. This is especially true for products from the Modules, Kit, Dongle and Sensor.
Normally (but not always) opening the engine compartment requires loosening the crank. To do this, you will need a Crank puller. Some engines also have a Spider Tool This is important for opening the lock ring on the chainring - because the chainring must be loosened here so that the motor cover can be removed to access the inside of the motor. If you want to replace the chainring (wear, change the gear ratio), you often need a Spider Tool. The necessary special tools can also be found in our shop. To remove the engine cover, you usually need a Torx or Allen key. For installing the modules, appropriate Pliers from the electronics sector.
Do you decide not for a tuning solution that you have to install in the engine compartment (Box, Software), there is no need for any tools. In our Guide you will find further tips.

Important information on tuning measures for e-bikes and e-scooters
We expressly point out that any modification to e-bikes and e-scooters – whether through hardware tuning (e.g. tuning chips, dongles, sensor adapters) or software tuning (e.g. apps, programs or USB tools) – can have consequences.
Tuning measures on e-bikes and e-scooters mean that they are no longer permitted for use on public roads as defined by the StVZO (Road Traffic Licensing Regulations). Legal use is therefore only possible on private property or - if permitted - in competitions. Riding an e-bike or e-scooter modified by tuning measures on public roads can lead to criminal liability for driving without a license (Section 21 of the Road Traffic Act) and driving without insurance (Section 6 of the PflVG). Tuning measures on e-bikes can lead to the loss of warranty rights and manufacturer guarantees. Furthermore, tuning measures can lead to the loss of insurance coverage and benefits from accident victim assistance in the event of an accident. The e-bike (or e-scooter) modified by tuning measures is subject to additional stress due to the higher speed, which can lead to safety risks.
