About Yamaha
Yamaha's history dates back to 1887, when the company was founded by Torakusu Yamaha in Japan. The company's product range primarily includes electronics, hi-fi, and musical instruments. In 1955, the Yamaha Motor Corporation was founded as a subsidiary of the Yamaha Corporation, focusing on motorcycles, quads, and engines. Yamaha, in particular, Powerdrive Motors are now considered a real alternative to the market-dominating Bosch e-bike drives.
The E-Bike Tuning Yamaha Overview.
Yamaha Powerdrive E-bike motors
The first Yamaha mid-engine was launched in 1993 (!). However, it was the Yamaha Powerdrive (PW) engine, which was released about 20 years later. This innovative engine was quite small and light, yet extremely powerful. The Yamaha Powerdrive Drivetrains have been continuously refined and optimized over the years, resulting in a variety of Yamaha PW series on the market. These drives are installed in the vehicles of various e-bike manufacturers. We would like to briefly introduce you to some of the most important PW drive systems (as of March 2021).
Yamaha PW (Powerdrive)
The classic Yamaha PW motor first came onto the market in 2014 and is still used in numerous e-bikes today. Despite its compactness and low weight, it is extremely powerful (70 Nm). Thanks to three sensors, the drive unit scores highly for its particularly sensitive response. It offers four support modes. Maximum torque: 4 Nm / Power: 70W / Motor weight: 250 kg.
Yamaha PW-X
This powerful drive system was launched in 2017 and is specifically designed for e-mountain bikes. A fifth support level ("Extra Power Mode") is particularly interesting, specifically designed for riding on very steep climbs. Responsiveness has been optimized, and the continuous rated power has been increased to 80 Nm. Overall, the support level is even more finely tuned than with the Yamaha PW drive system. The weight of the motor has been reduced from 3,5 to 3,1 kg. Also new to the Yamaha PW-X system is the powerful 500 Wh battery.
Yamaha PW-X2
This high-performance sports motor is a further development of the popular Yamaha PW-X drive. The PW-X2 has all the advantages of the original, but scores with improved power assistance at higher cadence. Maximum torque 80 Nm (in "Extra Power Mode"), power 250W, and weight 3,1 kg.
Yamaha PW-X3
The Yamaha PW-X3 Motor was launched in 2022. It is a completely newly developed drive system specifically designed for use in e-mountain bikes. Compared to its predecessor PW-X2the PW-X3 both 10% lighter (total weight 2,75 kg) and about 20% more compact, so that manufacturers can integrate the motor even better into the bikes.
Nevertheless, the torque has been increased by a full 5 Nm compared to its predecessor: With an enormous torque of 85 Nm in total, the Yamaha PW-X3 Engine with the Bosch Performance Line CX (Gen4 / Bosch Smart System) or the Shimano EP8 Motors catch up. Thanks Zero-Cadence Technology The motor support should PW-X3 Responds to pedal pressure with lightning speed and perfect control. The engine is thus optimally adapted to off-road driving and can easily handle even challenging inclines.
It is also worth mentioning that the PW-X3 has a specially developed automatic mode which is designed to provide perfectly dosed additional power in different terrain.
Apparently the Yamaha PW-X3 engines, just like the new Bosch drives, have an integrated anti-tuning software, but there are already some tuning solutions with which you can PW-X3 can unlock engines (see below).
Yamaha PW-SE
The Yamaha PW-SE motor was introduced in the 2018 model year – "SE" stands for "Sport Edition." A true all-rounder, the PW-SE motor is aimed at comfort-oriented riders and can be positioned between the classic Yamaha PW and the PW-X drivetrain. A particular advantage of the PW-SE is the increased cadence of 110 rpm, which means the rider still benefits from powerful motor assistance even at very high cadences. The proven "Zero Cadence Support" also ensures strong support from the first crank revolution on the PW-SE. The reliable Yamaha triple sensor system is also used. Torque 70 Nm / Power 250W / Weight 3,5 kg.
Yamaha PW-ST
The PW-ST drives are true all-rounders – equally suitable for beginners and experienced e-bikers, on-road or off-road. An automatic assistance mode for sporty riding and trail riding ensures extra comfort. This system automatically selects the right level of assistance based on the current riding conditions. You can concentrate fully on shifting and braking; the system takes care of the mode changes. Maximum torque: 70 Nm / Power: 250W / Weight: 3,4 kg.
Yamaha PW-TE
This drive was specifically designed for urban commuting, with particular emphasis on driving stability and comfort. An automatic assist mode provides intelligent, natural power assistance. Maximum torque 60 Nm / power 250W / weight 3,4 kg.
Yamaha PW-CE
Specially developed for everyday urban use. This 250W motor may have "only" 50 Nm, but at just 2,9 kg, it's the lightest Yamaha e-bike drive ever. The PW-CE motor is also extremely quiet. The Walk Assist function has been redesigned and provides very balanced support should the e-bike need to be pushed. There's also an Automatic Support Mode – a smooth, spontaneous additional boost makes for a more pleasant riding experience, especially during the annoying stop-and-go at traffic lights and intersections.
Yamaha PW XM
The Yamaha PW-XM drive was first introduced in 2023 and is currently considered the premium motor among Yamaha eMTB drive systems (as of early 2025). It is a powerful, high-tech motor with 85 Nm of torque and weighs just 2.6 kg. With its lightweight magnesium housing, this drive offers the best torque-to-weight ratio of any Yamaha e-bike drive system. Attractive tuning solutions for Yamaha PW-XM motors are already available, for example, from tuning brands. PearTune and SpeedBox (see below).
Can Yamaha mid-engines be optimized?
Yes! There are now many recommended tuning tools that can be used to easily tune Yamaha PW and numerous other Yamaha e-bike drives, making them faster.
Note: Since 2023, the first e-bikes of the Yamaha brand have entered the European market. These include, for example, the models Yamaha Moro 07, Yamaha CrossCore RC, Yamaha Wabash RT & Yamaha Booster / Booster EasyThese e-bikes are equipped with a speed sensor that can be used with the previous Yamaha tuning tools not is compatible. For this reason, Yamaha’s own-brand e-bikes could not be tuned for a long time. But fortunately, since the end of 2024, the first tuning solutions for some e-bikes of the own brand "Yamaha" have also been available - for example, such as the "VOLspeed V3 for Yamaha Moro 07" or the "SpeedBox 3.3 for Yamaha PW-X3 / PW-S2 / Moro 07 / YDX-Moro 05".
What Yamaha tuning tools are available?
BluePed for Yamaha PW engines
The BluePed The module is a particularly elegant tuning solution for e-bikes with Yamaha PW engines. This tuning tool can be conveniently controlled via a free smartphone app, allowing you to benefit from an unusually wide range of setting options (for example, setting the maximum motor support to any desired value). The tuning chip can be switched on and off as required; an extra battery is not required. Compatible with Yamaha Haibike PW-X3 & PW S2, Display A (Side Switch) from 2023. RedPed for Yamaha PW-X / PW-SE (Display X)
In terms of features, this is probably the most comprehensive tuning module for Yamaha PW e-bikes ever. This tuning tool has the advantage that settings can be conveniently adjusted via a smartphone app. This allows, for example, you to set the maximum motor support to a customized value. Another advantage is that up to 25 useful live parameters can be displayed on your smartphone while on the go. The e-bike display shows the correct speed, even when tuning is active.
Splug: Dongle for Yamaha PW-X3, PW-S2 & SyncDrive Pro2
A waterproof tuning dongle for removing the 25 km/h speed limit on Yamaha PW-X3, PW-S2, and SyncDrive Pro2 e-bikes. This tuning tool is characterized by its high efficiency and flawless operation. Unlike conventional tuning chips and modules, the dongle can be removed at any time. Since all hardware and software are contained in the dongle itself, all tuning-relevant components can be removed from the e-bike within seconds (leaving only the wiring harness behind). A tuning module specifically and exclusively for Yamaha Moro 07 E-Bikes (with Yamaha PW-X3 Motor & Interface X). With the VOLspeed V3 not only allows you to remove the 25 km/h speed limit, but also to individually adjust the maximum speed (25-45 km/h). A special feature is the optional "Dynamic Mode," in which the motor support stops less abruptly when the set maximum speed is reached (reduced "wall effect"). The module is conveniently controlled via the e-bike's control buttons. An additional battery is not required. If a display is available (ANT+ LEV), the current speed and total distance are displayed correctly.
VOLspeed V2 for Yamaha PW
With this highly recommended tuning module, you can optimize your Yamaha PW e-bike in a variety of ways. Increase the maximum motor support to a custom value or additionally activate the so-called "Dynamic Mode," which reduces the unpopular "wall" effect when reaching the maximum assisted speed (the motor support stops less abruptly). A highly recommended tuning module that offers a wide range of optimization options. VOLspeed The tool doesn't just remove the speed limit; you can even set the maximum motor assistance to a custom value. Furthermore, a dynamic mode can be activated, which reduces the annoying "wall effect" (the motor assistance then stops less abruptly when reaching top speed). All settings are made using the control buttons on the bike; no PC or smartphone is required. Tuning can be conveniently switched on and off using the buttons on the e-bike. Even when tuning is active, the display shows all values correctly (speed, remaining range, etc.). PearTune MSO 4.0 for Yamaha PW-X3 & PW-S2 & PW-XM
The PearTune MSO 4.0 offers various options for optimizing e-bikes with Yamaha PW-X3 or PW-S2 drives. Sx2 dongle for Yamaha PW engines
Another excellent tuning tool from Germany is the Sx2 dongle. This proven Yamaha tuning tool is built into a compact jack plug, which you simply connect to the e-bike's speed sensor using a special cable set. The speed limit is then removed. Since the dongle only automatically activates at speeds above approximately 20 km/h, all riding modes remain fully intact (no interference with the motor electronics). The Speed Box 2 is a processor-controlled tuning module that removes the speed limit on Yamaha e-bike drives. A key advantage of this tuning tool is that the display continues to show all data correctly (current speed, range, trip distance, etc.). Installation is simple, and thanks to the form-fitting connectors, accidental misconnection is impossible. No diagnostics are required during installation, so you can easily install it yourself. The Speed Box 2 is developed and manufactured in the Czech Republic.
sIMPLEk for PW, PW-X, PW-SE engines
With this tuning tool, you can completely remove the speed limit on Yamaha e-bike mid-drive motors (suitable for PW, PW-SE & PW-X drives). Important: This module is delivered as a kit, which you must first assemble yourself. Since a soldering iron is required during assembly, a little manual skill is required. Connecting the module to the e-bike drive, however, is absolutely straightforward. After installation, the sIMPLEk Easily activate tuning by turning the e-bike off and on again within 10 seconds of starting. When tuning is activated, the actual speed is still visible, but only via the second digit and the decimal place of the speed indicator on the e-bike display. Made in Germany.
sIMPLEk Stick for Yamaha
The first tuning dongle for Yamaha e-bikes ever that still displays the correct speed. This tool completely removes the limitation of motor assistance. After installing the cable set, you can plug or unplug the dongle at any time to turn the tuning on or off. Please note that the sIMPLEk The stick is delivered as a kit. Since it only consists of four individual parts, assembly is extremely straightforward.
